This week, a bunch of books took their first big steps toward the screen. Here’s a roundup of the teasers and trailers that dropped this week.
‘Avengers: Doomsday’
Marvel showed a new look at the upcoming “Avengers: Doomsday” at the D23 event Friday. Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm talks in the teaser and we see some of our favorite superheroes looking forlorn.

“Avengers: Doomsday,” directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, will be released Dec. 18.
‘The Perfect Lie’
Netflix released the first trailer for the Dutch drama “The Perfect Lie” on Thursday. The series is based on the best-selling novel “The Dinner Club” by Saskia Noort. Dorien Goertzen and Jop Esmeijer are co-writers of the series, which will stream on September 10. The cast includes Loes Haverkort, Teun Luijkx, Remko Vrijdag, Rifka Lodeizen, Charlie-Chan Dagelet, Matthijs van de Sande Bakhuyzen, Noortje Herlaar and Edwin Jonker.
“Luxurious dinners, fine wines and carefully curated evenings are gradually undermined by distrust, deception and betrayal,” a synopsis of the series reads. “What appears to be an enviable lifestyle begins to unravel, turning into a dangerous game in which everyone has something to hide and something to lose.”
‘Stillwater’ Season 5
Apple TV released a trailer for the fifth season of its animated children’s series, “Stillwater,” on Wednesday. The series is based on the “Zen” book series by Jon J Muth and published by Scholastic. It follows three young siblings voiced by Judah Mackey, Eva Ariel Binder and Tucker Chandler, and their panda neighbor Stillwater, voiced by James Sie. It returns to screens Aug. 21.
“Through his example, stories and gentle humor, Stillwater teaches the children the concept of mindfulness, while offering them a deeper understanding of their feelings as well as tools that help them face their own day-to-day challenges,” a synopsis of the series reads.
‘Neagley’
Maria Sten stars as Frances Neagley in the new series, based on the character from Lee Child’s “Reacher” novels. Neagley is a private investigator in Chicago and was in the military with Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson). In this new series, she learns of a friend’s death and aims to find out what really happened.
A new trailer released Wednesday is action-packed with badass Neagley running, fighting, making sarcastic jabs and lighting things on fire. Ritchson also makes appearances. It streams Sept. 16 on Prime Video.
‘Surviving the Silence: The Roxane Gay Story’
Lifetime shared a trailer Tuesday for its upcoming adaptation of writer Roxane Gay’s memoir, “Hunger: A Memoir of (My) Body.” The film, retitled “Surviving the Silence: The Roxanne Gay Story” tells her experience of trauma, survival, body image and healing. The film is narrated by Gay, who is portrayed by Hilda Martin and Sunnii E. Bartee at different ages.
“When 12-year-old Roxane moves with her family to what appears to be the ideal suburban community, her life is forever changed after a devastating act of sexual violence,” a synopsis of the film reads.
“As she grapples with the lasting effects of that trauma, Roxane turns to food as a means of survival, beginning a lifelong journey to understand her body, reclaim her voice and confront a society that often defines women by their appearance.”
Gay adapted her own book for the screenplay and Asia Youngman directed. The film is set to air Sept. 5.
‘Last Seen’
Apple TV released its first trailer Tuesday for its new thriller series “Last Seen.” Patrick Brammall stars as Ian Ridley in the six-episode series. Set in Australia, it is an adaptation of the book “The Dispatcher” by Ryan David Jahn.
Brammall plays a police detective-turned-dispatcher whose life fell apart when his daughter disappeared. After 11 years, he still hasn’t given up hope that she’s still alive, and a desperate call from a teen girl renews his vow to find her. The series, which also stars Maxine Peake, Brendan Cowell and Daniel Henshall, premieres Sept. 9 on Apple TV.
‘Verity’
The trailer for “Verity,” based on Colleen Hoover’s 2018 novel, dropped Tuesday. In the clip, Jeremy Crawford (Josh Hartnett) tells Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson) that she is the only one who could finish his wife Verity’s (Anne Hathaway) book.
Jeremy shows Lowen that his wife, who is a bestselling author, has been incapacitated by an accident. Lowen moves in with the married couple to work on the book and uncovers Verity’s disturbing autobiographical notes. She also develops an attraction to Jeremy, finding herself drawn into a mystery that makes her question what is real.
The thriller will premiere in theaters on Oct. 2.
