Adaptation news Aug. 7-13: ‘Off Campus,’ ‘Discretion’ and more

The pipeline from page to screen shows no signs of slowing. Here’s a quick look at the latest adaptation announcements, casting updates and projects in development.

Shay Rudolph joins ‘Off Campus’ Season 2

Prime Video announced Thursday that Shay Rudolph has been cast as Summer Di Laurentis, sister to Dean Di Laurentis (Stephen Kalyn), the main love interest in Season 2 of “Off Campus.” The streamer announced the casting news with a video of Rudolph and Kalyn wearing matching cardigans with the caption, “Double it and give it to Season 2.”

Season 2—which adapts the second book in the series by Elle Kennedy, “The Score,”—focuses on the romance between Dean and Allie Hayes, played by Mika Abdalla. Both appeared in supporting roles in Season 1, which starred Ella Bright and Belmont Cameli as Hannah and Garrett. All four actors are expected to revive their roles in the next season.

Nicole Kidman, Elle Fanning legal thriller ‘Discretion’ begins production

Paramount+ announced Thursday that production has begun on its upcoming legal thriller “Discretion.” The streamer also shared a photo of the first episode’s script to mark the day. “Discretion” is an adaptation of a short story by the same name by Chandler Baker. The story has yet to be published, but a synopsis says it’s a legal thriller about an associate at a Dallas law firm, Lenny (Elle Fanning), who uncovers a dark secret at the firm through several NDAs.

“When she realizes she signed the same agreement, her discoveries put her in the crosshairs of the firm’s most powerful female partner Sharon (Nicole Kidman)—upending their mentor-protege dynamic and raising the question: Who gets to keep secrets and at what cost?” the synopsis reads.

The series comes to Paramount+ in 2027.

‘Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory’ gets theatrical release date

Netflix announced Wednesday that the upcoming animation “Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory” will get a theatrical release several weeks before heading to the streaming service. The film, featuring the voices of Kit Connor and Taika Waititi will hit theaters Nov. 5, 2027, and will begin streaming Dec. 22, 2027.

This adaptation takes place years after the events of the book “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” by Roald Dahl. In this new story, Wonka has been released from prison, where he was sent for turning a child into a blueberry.

“Wonka returns to his factory determined to add a little sweetness to a bitter world,” a synopsis of the film reads. “But one thing stands in his way: teenager Charlie Paley (Connor) and his friends.”

The film also features the voices of Charithra Chandran, Samson Kayo, Christopher Chung, Kate Winslet and Helena Bonham Carter, who played Charlie’s mom in the 2005 live-action adaptation of the book.

‘It Happened One Summer’ set pic released

The official Instagram account for the film adaptation of Tessa Bailey’s “It Happened One Summer” shared a behind-the-scenes look at filming underway in New York. The photo is a selfie of Tyler Hoechlin, Virginia Gardner, Nina Dobrev and Gavin Leatherwood on set dressed as their respective characters—Brendan, Hannah, Piper and Fox.

“Meet the Bellinger sisters, Brendan & Fox,” the caption reads.

The film is directed by Peter Hutchings with a script adapted by Christina Mengert and Joseph Muszynski. It tells the story of Piper, a wealthy young woman who is financially cut off by her family after landing herself in jail. She and her sister Hannah are tasked with running their late father’s bar on the coast. There, Piper has an enemies-to-lovers encounter with a local sea captain, Brendan.

Holly Black’s ‘Cruel Prince’ series heads to Amazon Studios

Fantasy and young adult author Holly Black told People magazine on Aug. 7 that her “The Folk of the Air” series has been picked up for an adaptation by Amazon Studios. She’s set to executive produce the production alongside Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions. Black confirmed the news in a post on Instagram, saying she is “both thrilled and relieved to be finally sharing it.”

The franchise began in 2018 with the publication of “The Cruel Prince.” It told the story of Jude, a mortal girl living in the faerie world of Elfhame with her twin sister after their parents were killed. There, she’s bullied by her peers, including Prince Cardan, for lacking magical abilities, but she secretly becomes a spy. The book was followed by two others—“The Wicked King” and “The Queen of Nothing”—multiple story collections, novellas and a companion duology featuring “The Stolen Heir” and “The Prisoner’s Throne.”
