Adaptation news June 30-July 1: ‘Neagley,’ ‘Bone Parish’ and more

The pipeline from page to screen shows no signs of slowing. Here’s a quick look at the latest adaptation announcements, casting updates and projects in development.

Prime Video shares first look, date for ‘Reacher’ series ‘Neagley’

Prime Video released a first look at “Reacher” series “Neagley.” Maria Sten stars as Frances Neagley in the new series, based on the character from Lee Child’s “Reacher” novels. Neagley is a private investigator in Chicago and was in the military with Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson). In this new series, she learns of a friend’s death and aims to find out what really happened.

Season 4 of “Reacher” will premiere on Aug. 12 with three episodes, then weekly ones on Wednesdays through Sept. 16. That is when Neagley takes over as the new series will premiere on Sept. 16.

“Neagley” is created by executive producers and co-showrunners Nick Santora and Nicholas Wootton. In addition, the series is executive produced by author Child, Don Granger, Sam Hill, Adam Higgs and Lisa Kussner.

‘Bad Bridgets’ cast announced

Netflix announced a new crime saga adaptation, “Bad Bridgets,” inspired by Elaine Farrell and Leanne McCormick’s book and research project “Bad Bridget: Crime, Mayhem and the Lives of Irish Emigrant Women.” The story was also adapted into a podcast. 

Emilia Jones and Alison Oliver will star in the film, written and directed by Rich Peppiatt. The story follows two sisters who leave their abusive father in Ireland and head to the United States. The pair arrive in New York City and meet other Irish women, the so-called “Bridgets.” Netflix’s Tudum says the name “Bridget” comes from a nickname for Irish house servants. 

Colin Farrell, Steve Coogan, Charlie Heaton, Domhnall Gleeson, Himesh Patel, Niamh Algar and Simone Kirby also star in the film.  

‘Musafir Cafe’ romance drama to premiere July 24 

Netflix also announced a new romance series, “Musafir Cafe.” Based on the novel of the same name by Divya Prakash Dubey, the story follows three “musafirs,” which is a name for travelers, played by Vikrant Massey, Vedika Pinto and Mahima Makwana. Their lives intersect in unexpected ways in this romantic drama, which takes place in Bhopal and Mussoorie in India. The series is created and written by Sharanya Rajgopal and directed by Ruchir Arun. It premieres July 24.

Colleen Hoover to produce Ali Hazelwood adaptation

“It Ends With Us” author Colleen Hoover is one of the producers of an adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s 2023 book “Love, Theoretically.” Amazon MGM Studios acquired the movie rights earlier this week. Sofia Alvarez will be the screenwriter and director of the film.

Production company Magic Hour Entertainment posted on Instagram: “The excitement we have for LOVE, THEORETICALLY is not at all theoretical! We’re incredibly grateful to partner with Amazon MGM Studios and to work again with the brilliant Sofia Alvarez. It’s a privilege and joy to continue to collaborate with Lauren Levine and Colleen Hoover at Heartbones. Most of all, the film we hope you’ll fall in love with exists because of the immense talent and imagination of Ali Hazelwood.”

Starz to develop ‘Bone Parish’ graphic novel

Starz announced Tuesday that it won the bidding war for “Bone Parish,” an adaptation of the supernatural crime graphic novel by Cullen Bunn and Jonas Scharf. Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson will executive produce the series through G-Unit Film & Television company, while Diane Ademu-John and Declan de Barra (“Dune: Prophecy”) will serve as executive producers and co-showrunners. 

“I’ve always been drawn to stories that break the mold, and ‘Bone Parish’ does exactly that. It takes crime, family, and power, and mixes it with something dark and supernatural, in a way that feels fresh. Exploring what happens when the world of the living gets mixed up with the world of the dead, this story has incredible depth, and we’re building a series that’s going to keep audiences locked in from the first episode,” said Jackson.

‘One Piece’ wraps filming Season 3

On Tuesday, Netflix announced production has wrapped on Season 3 of “One Piece.” The series follows the Straw Hats led by Luffy (Iñaki Godoy). The rest of the crew includes Nami (Emily Rudd), Zoro (Mackenyu), Usopp (Jacob Romero), Sanji (Taz Skylar), and Princess Vivi (Charithra Chandran). The next chapter, titled “One Piece: The Battle of Alabasta,” follows the Straw Hats as they gather to help Vivi save her homeland.

“For many ‘One Piece’ fans, Alabasta is the arc that hooked them as nakama for life, combining [One Piece manga creator Eiichiro Oda] Oda-san’s incredible talent for world-building and memorable characters in a story that’s thematically rich, emotionally gripping, and visually spectacular,” Season 3 co-showrunners, writers and executive producers Joe Tracz and Ian Stokes told Tudum.  

‘Enola Holmes 3’ 5-minute preview

Enola Holmes 3” premieres July 1 on Netflix. From the trailer, we know that Enola (Millie Bobby Brown) and Lord Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge) are basking in their new love, get engaged and are then interrupted by a mystery. Our hero cannot get a break as she learns her brother  Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill) has been kidnapped.

The film series is based on the “Enola Holmes Mysteries” series, written by Nancy Springer. The third film is based on the third book, “The Case of the Bizarre Bouquets.” The first film premiered in 2020. Philip Barantini is the director of the third film and Jack Thorne is the screenwriter for all three.

‘Lady Grace Mysteries’ to return for Season 2

Children’s BBC series “Lady Grace Mysteries” is returning for a second season and for a winter special. The show centers on Lady Grace Cavendish (Evie Coles), teen spy for Queen Elizabeth (Rebecca Scott) and her adventures in the Tudor court. 

Grace continues to protect Queen Elizabeth in Season 2, where she will meet her nemesis,  Mary, Queen of Scots during an undercover mission. The show is based on a series of children’s novels written by Patricia Finney, with Sara Volger and Jan Burchett later joining as co-authors. Anna McCleery is the creator of the CBBC series. Season 1 premiered in April.

‘Anisha, Accidental Detective’ adaptation announced

CBBC also announced the adaptation of “Anisha, Accidental Detective” based on the eight-book series by Serena Patel. The series takes place in Manchester and follows another young detective—10-year-old Anisha Mistry.  When Anisha’s auntie’s fiancé disappears before their big Indian wedding, Anisha makes it her mission to find out what happened. The series is produced by BBC Studios Kids & Family and executive produced by actress Archie Panjabi.  

‘Jamie Johnson FC’ to return for a fifth season

Also Tuesday, CBBC announced that “Jamie Johnson FC” is returning for a fifth season. The football drama is a spinoff series of “Jamie Johnson,” which was created by Dan Freedman and is based on his series of books. The show centers on the world of elite academy football. The new season, which will film in Leeds this summer, continues following Jamie Johnson during his time at Hawx Academy. 

Disney orders live-action series ‘Last Kids on Earth

Disney and Disney+ ordered a pilot for a series based on the popular post-apocalyptic children’s book series by Max Brallier. Showrunners Chad Fiveash and James Stoteraux are writing the pilot. The logline for the series reads: “When monsters overrun the sleepy town of Wakefield, a mismatched group of teens must band together, not only to survive, but to become the unlikely heroes charged with stopping the end of the world.”

‘Blade & Bastard’ adaptation coming

AMC announced Tuesday that its HIDIVE will adapt Kumo Kagyu’s light novel “Blade & Bastard.” The novel itself is inspired by the video game “Wizardry.” The series is set to premiere in 2027.

“We’re thrilled to reveal that the upcoming new anime ‘Blade & Bastard’ will stream exclusively on HIDIVE as part of our 2027 simulcast slate,” said John Ledford, president of HIDIVE. “This eagerly-awaited dark fantasy offers an exciting mix of action and adventure that is sure to entertain audiences all series long.” 

The series stars Makoto Furukawa, Tomori Kusunoki, Daiki Yamashita, Saori Hayami and Shion Wakayama. Tomoki Kobayashi will direct with Naruhisa Arakawa on series composition.
