This week, a bunch of books took their first big steps toward the screen. Here’s a roundup of the teasers and trailers that dropped this week.
‘Pressure’
The second trailer for the World War II film “Pressure” was released this week, highlighting the dire consequences of weather on the timing of the Allied invasion of Normandy, France. The film tells the story of the meteorologist responsible for making sure the Allied powers chose the correct time to launch the D-Day attack to end the war. The film is an adaptation of the David Haig stage play by the same name. It stars Andrew Scott, Brendan Fraser and Damian Lewis and hits theaters May 29.
‘La Bola Negra’
“La Bola Negra,” or “The Black Ball” in English, is a Spanish-language film that adapts the final, unfinished novel by Federico García Lorca by the same name as well as the play “La Piedra Oscura” or “The Dark Stone” by Alberto Conejero. The film from the writing-directing duo of Javier Calvo and Javier Ambrossi tells the story of three gay men across different eras in time. Glenn Close and Penélope Cruz join Guitarricadelafuente, Miguel Bernardeau, Julio Torres and Carlos Gonzàlez. The film had its premiere at the Cannes Festival this month but doesn’t have a U.S. premiere date.
‘Victorian Psycho’
Maika Monroe plays a scarily unhinged governess in the first trailer for “Victorian Psycho,” promising a bloody, spooky good time for those who are fans of the horror genre.
“Victorian Psycho” also stars Jacobi Jupe and Evie Templeton as Monroe’s charges, Jason Isaacs and Ruth Wilson as the children’s parents, and Thomasin McKenzie and Amy De Bhrún as fellow staff members in the home. Based on Virginia Feito’s novel of the same name, the film hits theaters September 25.
‘Lanterns’
The second teaser trailer for the upcoming DC Studios series “Lanterns” includes the first look at Laura Linney in an as-yet unspecified role.
She appears to play some sort of authoritative role in respect to John Stewart (Aaron Pierre). John is a sort of apprentice to the Green Lantern himself, Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler). But the two men seem to butt heads over who controls the ring that gives Hal his powers.
John tells Linney’s character: “I was raised fearless, and I’ll do this better than he’s ever done it before.”
She replies: “Then go and get it, John Stewart.”
The HBO series also stars Nathan Fillion, Kelly Macdonald, Jason Ritter and Garret Dillahunt. The series debuts August 16.
