Director Matt Reeves is teasing upcoming sequel “The Batman: Part II” by sharing still images from test footage for the film.
Reeves, who directed and co-wrote 2022’s “The Batman,” posted two photos to X showing the Batmobile traveling on a snowy road.
He captioned the post “#SnowTires” along with a bat emoji.
A third photo in a separate post appears to show an explosion as seen from inside a car.
Reeves responded to questions from other X users, confirming the photos showed test footage from the upcoming sequel and that the film would take place, at least in part, in winter.
The film was originally set for a 2025 premiere, but has since been delayed twice, with a new release date of Oct. 1, 2027.
Robert Pattinson is slated to return as Bruce Wayne, aka Batman, and will be joined by Sebastian Stan as Harvey Dent, the prosecutor who eventually becomes the villainous Two Face, and Scarlet Johansson in an as-yet unknown role. Also expected to return are Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Jeffrey Wright as James Gordon and Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb, aka the Penguin.
Details of the screenplay written by Reeves and Mattson Tomlin have yet to be revealed, but the wintry setting invites speculation that Mr. Freeze could make an appearance. However, winter also plays a significant role in Jeph Loeb and Tim Sale’s “Batman: The Long Halloween,” which Reeves has previously cited as a major inspiration for his interpretation of Batman and the world he inhabits. This could also lend credence to the rumors that Johansson’s mystery character is Gilda Dent, Harvey Dent’s wife at the time of the events of “The Long Halloween” (I can’t really explain why without spoiling the whole thing, you’ll just have to take my word for it).
“The Batman: Part II” follows the events of the 2022 film “The Batman” and last year’s “The Penguin” series on HBO Max. Reeves’ universe exists independently of James Gunn’s DCU, so don’t expect any connections to “Superman” or the upcoming horror film “Clayface” to factor into the plot.
About the writer
Ben Hooper is going to make a lot of people very angry by saying he thinks “The Long Halloween” is overrated and not very well written. However, he will concede that Tim Sale’s artwork on the book is amazing.
