For fast readers:
“The Devil in Silver” by Victor LaValle
Fans of horror, you’re in luck. Not many horror films and series are adapted from books, but the third season of “The Terror,” subtitled “Devil in Silver,” is tackling the 2012 horror novel “The Devil in Silver” by Victor LaValle. His story follows Dan Stevens as Pepper, the new resident at a psychiatric hospital in Queens, N.Y. He has no memory of his crime nor is he mentally ill, but while in the ward he comes face to face with a creature stalking him and the other residents. The series comes to AMC+ and Shudder on May 7.
“Remarkably Bright Creatures” by Shelby Van Pelt
The story follows a grieving 70-year-old widow, Tova (Sally Field), as she forms a bond with Marcellus the giant octopus at her job at the aquarium. She also develops a connection with Cameron (Lewis Pullman), a drifter new to town, which helps her uncover a long-held mystery about her son. “Remarkably Bright Creatures” premieres on May 8 on Netflix.
For medium-pace readers:
“The Deal” from the “Off Campus” series by Elle Kennedy
Fans of sexy hockey might want to read “The Deal” ahead of Prime Video’s adaptation titled “Off Campus.” It follows Hannah, who tutors the captain of her college hockey team in exchange for a fake date. You know where this is going. The series stars Ella Bright, Belmont Cameli and Steve Howey. “Off Campus” premieres on May 13.
“Summerwater” by Sarah Moss
If you’re looking for a good murder mystery, a series adaptation of Sarah Moss’ “Summerwater” is heading to streaming soon. The book follows groups of people getting away from the hustle of daily life in a copse of cabins in remote Scotland. Each is wrapped up in their own concerns, but tensions rise as they all begin to notice something isn’t quite right with one of the families. Starring Shirley Henderson, Dougray Scott and Valene Kane, the series premieres on Acorn TV on May 25.
For readers who like to take their time:
“Cape Fear” by John D. MacDonald
This one’s a little tricky because the book exists under two titles—“Cape Fear” and “The Executioners.” You’re probably more familiar with the former thanks to the 1991 film adaptation. Now, Apple TV is taking another stab at the story in a series following Max Cady (Javier Bardem) who seeks to get revenge on the public defenders who helped put him away. Also starring Amy Adams, Patrick Wilson and CCH Pounder, the series premieres June 5.
“The Vampire Lestat” by Anne Rice
You might actually want to read a few books from Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles to prepare yourself for Season 3 of “Interview with the Vampire.” If you haven’t seen the first two seasons of the series, go ahead and read “Interview with the Vampire,” the 1976 book that kicked off an entire franchise. Season 3, which has been renamed “The Vampire Lestat,” is based on the book of the same name, the second in the Chronicles. But trailers for the new season show that it also takes a fair chunk of its plot from the third book, “Queen of the Damned.” Rice’s books are notoriously long, but go ahead and tackle them ahead of the Season 3 premiere June 7. I promise you it’ll be worth it.
