‘His & Hers,’ Marvel series among adaptation winners at Black Reel TV Awards

The Tessa Thompson-led drama “His & Hers” and multiple Marvel television series were among the adaptations that won Monday at the annual Black Reel TV Awards.

“His & Hers,” a drama that tells the story of an estranged couple and their connection to a local murder, picked up three awards, including Outstanding TV Movie or Limited Series. Thompson, who plays news anchor Anna Andrews opposite Jon Bernthal’s Detective Jack Harper, also won Outstanding Lead Performance in a TV Movie or Limited Series.

Writer Tori Sampson won the award for Outstanding Writing in a TV Movie or Limited Series for Episode 2 of the series. She adapted the script from the book of the same name by Alice Feeney.

Sampson is also known for her writing work on “Spider-Noir” and “Three Women.”

Speaking of Marvel, three MCU series took home awards this year. “Wonder Man” and “Ironheart” each had two wins, while “Daredevil: Born Again” had one.

Yahya Abdul-Mateen II won the award for Outstanding Lead Performance in a Comedy Series for his role as Simon Williams, the titular Wonder Man. Tiffany Johnson won Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series.

Marvel renewed the series for a second season earlier this year but reversed course and canceled it last month. Abdul-Mateen played an actor trying to make it big in Hollywood despite a ban on superpowered people working in the industry.

“Ironheart” won Outstanding Directing in a TV Movie or Limited Series for Angela Barnes, who also served as a director on the “Daredevil” reboot. “Ironheart” also won Outstanding Costume Design for Terrance Harris. He’s also known for his work on “Dear Evan Hansen.”

Rounding out the awards for Marvel was Stephanie Filo and Lyric Ramsey, who won the award for Outstanding Editing for their work on “Daredevil: Born Again.”

Finally, the Tyler Perry-produced romance, “Ruth & Boaz,” inspired by the Biblical “Book of Ruth,” won Outstanding Original Song—“Faithful,” performed by Serayah and written by Babyface.
