The pipeline from page to screen shows no signs of slowing. Here’s a quick look at the latest adaptation announcements, casting updates and projects in development.
Sophie Nelisse joins ‘This Summer Will Be Different’
“Heated Rivalry” star Sophie Nélisse has joined the cast of upcoming romance series “This Summer Will Be Different,” Netflix announced Thursday. The 10-episode series adapted the 2024 novel by Carley Fortune. It tells the story of Lucy (Nélisse), who falls in love with her best friend’s brother over the course of several summers on Canada’s Prince Edward Island. The actor celebrated the news on her Instagram Stories with a selfie captioned, “Send all the oysters my way!!!” (Prince Edward Island is known for its own variety of oysters).
No other casting announcements have been made and there’s no release date yet.
Season 5 of children’s series ‘Stillwater’ to premiere Aug. 21
Apple TV’s animated children’s series about mindfulness, “Stillwater,” will be returning to the screens Aug. 21 for Season 5, the streamer announced Thursday. The series is based on the “Zen” book series by Jon J Muth and published by Scholastic. It follows three young siblings voiced by Judah Mackey, Eva Ariel Binder and Tucker Chandler, and their panda neighbor Stillwater, voiced by James Sie.
“Through his example, stories and gentle humor, Stillwater teaches the children the concept of mindfulness, while offering them a deeper understanding of their feelings as well as tools that help them face their own day-to-day challenges,” a synopsis of the series reads.
Riley Keough, Carl Clemons-Hopkins join ‘Enigma Variations’ cast
Deadline reported Thursday that Riley Keough, Carl Clemons-Hopkins, Devon Terrell and Nicholas Podany have joined the cast of “Enigma Variations.” Podany confirmed the news in a post on Instagram. The limited series—an adaptation of André Aciman’s novel—stars previously announced Alicia Vikander and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Oliver Hermanus is set to direct the series and Amanda Kate Shuman will write and executive produce. A synopsis describes Taylor-Johnson’s Paul as “a man remade by the lovers who ignite and undo him across six transformative years.” Vikander will play Claire.
“It’s an intimate yet sweeping portrait of masculinity, sexuality and modern love—and in a world of endless choices, it asks the question: Will we know when we’ve found the one?”
Daniel Radcliffe, Peter Dinklage join ‘Steps,’ Cinderella retelling
Daniel Radcliffe and Peter Dinklage have been added to the cast of the animated Cinderella retelling, “Steps,” Netflix announced Wednesday. Radcliffe plays the Prince, Dinklage is the evil Roderick and fellow newcomer Young Mazino will play the handsome troll. “Steps” tells the little-known story of Cinderella’s evil stepsisters, Lilith (Ali Wong) and Margot (Stephanie Hsu). Lilith steals the Fairy Godmother’s (Bette Midler) magic wand and takes over the famous ball with Margot.
“This dooms the kingdom to the tyrannical rule of the villainous Priscilla (Nikki Glaser), who swoops in and snatches the throne,” a synopsis of the adaptation reads.
Lilith and Margot must team up with Cinderella (Amanda Seyfried) on a quest to save the kingdom. The film is set to premiere Nov. 20.
Filming begins on French Resistance series ‘Army of Shadows’
Paddy Considine, Kit Harington and America Ferrera will star in a new series dramatizing the French Resistance, “Army of Shadows.” Filming on the series, co-produced by StudioCanal and Two Cities Television and Channel 4, began Wednesday. The series is an adaptation of Joseph Kessel’s book of the same name about the Nazi occupation of France during World War II. The series also stars Alex Hassell and Lisa Gunning and was written by Ronan Bennett.
Criterion to release extended cut of ‘Frankenstein’
The Criterion Collection announced Wednesday it’s releasing the extended cut of Guillermo del Toro’s adaptation of “Frankenstein.” The so-called “Reborn Cut” will include an extra 8 minutes of runtime along with special features and commentary. The 4K edition will be available to purchase Oct. 27. The Netflix film starred Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein and Jacob Elordi as the creature and was originally released in November 2025.
Other adaptations getting the Criterion treatment in October are “The Silence of the Lambs” (Oct. 20); “Christiane F.” (Oct. 20); a Stanley Kubrik collection including “The Shining” and “A Clockwork Orange” (Oct. 20); and “The Shout” (Oct. 13).
Production begins on Spanish series ‘Queenpin’
Netflix announced Wednesday that production has started on a 1990s drug-trafficking series, “Queenpin.” The streamer also released a first-look photo of two of the series’ stars. The Spanish-language series is an adaptation of Ulises Bértolo’s novel of the same name, which in turn was based on a true story.
“‘Queenpin’ tells the incredible story of Diana García (, a young woman who flees to Madrid to escape a terrible past and who, together with her friends Penélope and Maricarmen, ends up leading one of the most ruthless drug cartels in 1990s Spain,” Netflix’s synopsis of the series reads.
Elena Rivera, Maxi Iglesias, Laura Weissmahr and Lola Rodríguez star, and Daniel Écija serves as both creator and co-writer of the screenplay. No release date has been announced.
AMC to stream ‘Vampire Lestat’ concert
Last month, Sam Reid took to the stage at the Beacon Theatre in New York City to perform a one-night-only concert as the Vampire Lestat. AMC announced Tuesday that it will bring the concert to televisions after the third season of “Interview with the Vampire”—renamed “The Vampire Lestat”—wraps up on the network. “The Vampire Lestat: One Night Only – LIVE” will debut on AMC+ on Aug. 23. The performance includes songs from series composer Daniel Hart. The series, part of AMC’s Immortal Universe, is an adaptation of Anne Rice’s Vampire Chronicles. Season 3 concludes July 19.
