Prime Video released the first full trailer for its upcoming series adaptation of Stephen King’s “Carrie.”
The video shows Carrie White attending school for the first time, full of optimism and a whole lot of naivety. Soon, it’s clear her classmates aren’t so charmed by her wholesome demeanor.
“I used to dream about this, having friends,” Carrie tells one girl at a house party right before a clip shows another student hit her with a volleyball.
While King’s debut 1974 novel has been the subject of a handful of adaptations over the past five decades, filmmaker Mike Flanagan is behind the first television series based on the novel.
To bring the story into the 21st century, Flanagan adds the element of cyberbullying to the adaptation, with the school’s mean girls taunting her on social media.
“Misfit high-schooler Carrie White (Summer Howell) has spent her life hidden away inside the walls of her home with her fiercely protective mother, Margaret (Samantha Sloyan),” a synopsis of the series reads. “After her father’s sudden, untimely death thrusts her into the unforgiving ecosystem of public high school, Carrie is forced to navigate a viral bullying scandal that tears through her community, the relentless pressure and casual cruelty of the social-media age, and the awakening of mysterious telekinetic powers that rise alongside her adolescence.”
The 22-year-old Howell has appeared in a number of mostly horror projects, including “Night of the Reaper” and “Spirit in the Blood.” Sloyan, meanwhile, is a frequent Flanagan collaborator, having appeared in “The Life of Chuck” (another King adaptation), “The Fall of the House of Usher” (based on an Edgar Allen Poe story), “The Midnight Club” (a Christopher Pike adaptation), “Midnight Mass” and “The Haunting of Hill House” (loosely based on a book by Shirley Jackson). She’s also slated to appear in Flanagan’s upcoming project, an adaptation of “The Exorcist.”
Also appearing in the “Carrie” series will be Matthew Lillard, Amber Midthunder, Siena Agudong, Arthur Conti, Alison Thorton, Josie Totah, Joel Oulette and Thalia Dudek.
“Carrie” is scheduled to premiere on Prime Video on Oct. 7
