Kristin Hannah celebrates ‘The Nightingale,’ finishes next novel

The adaptation of Kristin Hannah’s 2015 World War II novel “The Nightingale” has finished filming and is in post-production. Throughout the process the author has kept fans updated on her social media accounts.

On Friday, Hannah said she received mementos from Elle and Dakota Fanning, the sisters starring as French siblings, Vianne Mauriac and Isabelle Rossignol, navigating life under Nazi occupation. Hannah received a silver commemorative plate and a bag. The film, directed by Michael Morris, with Dana Stevens as the screenwriter, is scheduled to open in theaters on Feb. 12, 2027.

The author recently said she finished writing her next novel, which should be out in 2027. She offered advice to other writers about the process of writing her novels. She also has kept her fans updated on the books that she is reading, including “American Wagon” by Min Jin Lee, author of “Pachinko,” which was adapted to a series by creator Soo Hugh in 2022 on Apple TV. She also shared a recommendation for “Peck & Peck,” Bonnie Garmus’ next novel after “Lessons in Chemistry,” created by Lee Eisenberg, which was adapted to an Apple TV series in 2023.

Hannah is currently on tour for the paperback of her 2024 novel “The Women.” Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group acquired the rights to the novel, with showrunners Cate Adams and Diamond McNeill attached, before it was even published. The coming-of-age novel follows young nurse Frankie McGrath, who serves two tours during the Vietnam War. It shows her struggle with her family, who disapprove of her decision to become a military nurse, her bond with other nurses, the loss and horror of war, and the politics of the time, as women’s roles in the Vietnam War were often overlooked. Information on casting and the director has not been released.

Her other books on the path to the screen include 2018’s “The Great Alone,” which follows a family’s move to Alaska in the mid-1970s and 2021’s “The Four Winds” (this writer’s favorite), which follows a woman as she moves from Texas during the Dust Bowl to seek a better life in California in the 1930s amid the Great Depression.

Firefly Lane,” her 2008 novel, was her first adaptation. Netflix adapted the bestseller into a two-season series starring Kathryn Heigl and Sarah Chalke as lifelong best friends and polar opposites Tully and Kate.

About the writer

S. Lynn Bonanno is a recent fan of Kristin Hannah’s emotional historical fiction novels. Her favorites so far are “The Four Winds” and “The Women.” She continues to slowly read “The Nightingale” because she is still emotionally recovering from Hannah’s devastating “The Great Alone.” “Home Front,” meanwhile, was fine.
