This week in adaptation trailers: June 7–13

‘The Walking Dead: Dead City’ Season 3

The official trailer for Season 3 of AMC’s “The Walking Dead” spinoff, “Dead City,” was released Wednesday. Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan return as Maggie and Negan, enemies who have learned to put aside their differences to build the first community of survivors in Manhattan since the start of the zombie apocalypse. 

The series, which also stars Jimmi Simpson, Raúl Castillo, Aimee Garcia, Logan Kim and Michael Emery, debuts July 26.

‘Thunder 3’

Netflix released the official trailer for the new anime series “Thunder 3” on Thursday. Adapted from the manga series of the same name by Yuki Ikeda, it tells the story of middle-schooler Pyontaro and his two friends, Tsubame and Hiroshi. The trailer also features Pyontaro’s little sister, Futaba, who is obsessed with her big brother and follows him around, much to his annoyance. 

One day, the three boys’ teacher gives them a mysterious video disc that turns out to be a gateway to another world. While watching it, Futaba vanishes and the three older boys must go on an adventure to save her. 

The series debuts on Netflix on July 8.

‘Moana’

Disney released a new trailer for its live-action version of “Moana,” inspired by hundreds of years of Polynesian legends and storytelling. Like the 2016 animated version of the film, Moana (Catherine Laga’aia) must persuade the demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) to go on a dangerous adventure to save her island community of Motunui. 

The film, which also stars John Tui, Frankie Adams, Rena Owen and Jemaine Clement, hits theaters July 10.

‘The Social Reckoning’

Jeremy Strong is taking over the role of Mark Zuckerberg from Jesse Eisenberg in the new trailer for “The Social Reckoning,” a sequel to 2010’s “The Social Network.” The latter, a biographical drama about the founder of Facebook, was inspired by Ben Mezrich’s book, “The Accidental Billionaires.”

The trailer for the followup shows as Wall Street Journal reporter Jeff Horwitz (Jeremy Allen White) works to uncover the truth about how the social media platform operates and manipulates users. The film, which also stars Mikey Madison, Bill Burr, Billy Magnussen, Betty Gilpin and Wunmi Mosaku, is set to hit theaters October 9.

‘The Map of Longing’

Netflix released the trailer for “The Map of Longing,” a miniseries adaptation of Alice Kellen’s novel of the same name, on Tuesday. The Spanish-language series stars Alicia Falco as Greta, a woman who believes her sole purpose is to save her sister with leukemia through a stem cell transplant. But when her sister Lucy (Georgina Amoros) dies, it leaves Greta with an existential void. 

Also starring Pablo Alvarez, “The Map of Longing” comes to Netflix on July 17.

‘Whalefall’

“Following the death of his father (Josh Brolin), Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams) goes diving off the central Coast of California in search of his remains, but is swallowed by a massive sperm whale,” a synopsis of the film says. “While trapped inside its belly with only one hour of oxygen left, Jay comes to realize that the hard-earned lessons his father imparted may be the key to his escape.”

Whalefall” is an adaptation of the 2023 Daniel Kraus book by the same name. It also stars Elisabeth Shue, John Ortiz, Jane Levy and Emily Rudd. It hits theaters October 16.

‘Enola Holmes 3’

The new “Enola Holmes 3” teaser opens as Enola (Millie Bobby Brown), apparently late to her own wedding to Lord Tewkesbury (Louis Partridge), as she learns her brother, Sherlock Holmes (Henry Cavill) is missing. 

Far from London, our hero faces complications as she works with Sherlock’s legendary partner Dr. Watson (Himesh Patel) to find the detective. The third film in the franchise is an adaptation of the third book in the “Enola Holmes Mysteries” by Nancy Springer, “The Case of the Bizarre Bouquets.”

Directed by Philip Barantini, “Enola Holmes 3” premieres July 1 on Netflix.

‘Elle’ Season 1

Prime Video released a full trailer for the first season of its “Legally Blonde” prequel, “Elle,” on Tuesday. Set in 1995, the series stars Lexi Minetree as Elle Woods (played by Reese Witherspoon in the original movie) as she and her family move from sunny Los Angeles to Seattle. She has trouble fitting in, but soon puts her investigative skills to use to help her new classmates. 

The series, which has already been renewed for a second season, debuts July 1.

‘Camp Snoopy’ Season 2

Season 2 of “Camp Snoopy” premieres June 26 on Apple TV, starring everyone’s favorite black-and-white beagle and his pals Charlie Brown, Lucy and Peppermint Patty. The gang have adventures in the great outdoors in the second season of the cartoon series based on the comic strip first created by Charles Schulz in the 1950s.

‘The Cat in the Hat’

The Cat in the Hat” is making its way back to the big screen in a new animated movie featuring the voices of Bill Hader, Quinta Brunson, Matt Berry, Giancarlo Esposito, America Ferrera, Bowen Yang and Tituss Burgess. The titular cat—created by Dr. Seuss—is tasked with cheering up Gabby and Sebastian, two siblings who are lonely after moving to a new town. 

The film hits theaters on November 6.

‘Descendants: Wicked Wonderland’

Disney released a new teaser for the fifth offering in the “Descendants” franchise, “Wicked Wonderland.” The film stars Kylie Cantrall as Red and Malia Baker as Chloe as they travel to Wonderland and encounter the villainous Maddox Hatter (Leonardo Nam). 

Also starring Brandy and Rita Ora, the film debuts on Disney Channel and Disney+ on July 16.
