DC Studios co-head James Gunn revealed on Threads that work on super hero team film “The Authority” is currently on pause.
Gunn replied to another user on the social media site Monday confirming that “The Authority,” which he was not planning to personally write or direct, is currently on hold.
“The script wasn’t quite there but more importantly it didn’t work in terms of the larger DCU both in terms of the story and practical concerns. Maybe some day. Not soon,” Gunn wrote.
“The Authority” was one of 10 projects Gunn and Peter Safran announced for the then-nascent DC Universe in 2023.
The Engineer, who was played by María Gabriela de Faría in Gunn’s 2025 “Superman” film, is one of the founding members of the super team.
The Authority was formed by Jenny Sparks, a semi-immortal adventurer known as “The Spirit of the 20th Century,” to serve as a worldwide police force without the influence of — or interference from — any Earth governments. Other founding members included “the God of Cities” Jack Hawksmoor, winged huntress Swift, Dutch shaman The Doctor, Superman-esque powerhouse Apollo and enhanced combat expert Midnighter.
“The Authority” was originally published by WildStorm, an imprint of Image Comics until being sold to DC in 1998. The WildStorm universe continued until its characters were folded into the mainline DC Comics universe as part of the company’s 2011 publishing event “The New 52.”
Prior to The Authority being folded into the main DC universe, the comic company introduced The Elite, a thinly-veiled analogue of the team that came into conflict with Superman in the 2001 story line “What’s So Funny About Truth, Justice & the American Way?” The comic was adapted into the animated film “Superman vs. The Elite” in 2012.
About the writer
Ben Hooper still insists that folding WildStorm into the DC Comics universe was a mistake. What is the point of having Apollo and Midnighter in the same universe as Superman and Batman? It makes no sense, has led to zero interesting stories and completely upends the purpose of The Authority in the first place. But, no, he’s not mad about it. Please don’t put in the newspaper that Ben got mad.
