The trailer for “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” the latest entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, offered first looks at villains the Scorpion and Boomerang, as well as a mysterious voice cameo from actor Keith David.
The trailer, which dropped Wednesday, features Tom Holland’s Peter Parker dealing with the fallout from “Spider-Man: No Way Home,” which (spoiler alert) ended with the entire world forgetting his existence in order to avert a multiversal catastrophe.
He encounters his ex-girlfriend, MJ (Zendaya), and ex-best friend, Ned (Jacob Batalon), but they have no memories of their past involvement with Peter or his super heroic alter-ego.
The trailer also offers first looks at Michael Mando’s Scorpion—who previously appeared as a powerless Mac Gargan in “Spider-Man Homecoming”—and Boomerang, a masked villain whose actor has yet to be revealed.
Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, makes his big-screen debut after previously portraying the character in the eponymous “Daredevil” series on Netflix and last year’s “Daredevil: Born Again” on Disney+. The Hand, a shadowy organization of ninja assassins, also make the jump from the MCU’s TV wing to the cinema screen.
The trailer finds Peter seeking the assistance of Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), aka the Hulk, to investigate why his spider powers appear to be mutating.
Severance star Tramell Tillman, whose role has yet to be disclosed, also appears in the trailer, along with a voice cameo by actor Keith David discussing the life cycle of spiders.
David does not physically appear in the trailer, but speculation on his role is sure to follow—and the possibility of his playing the X-Men’s Professor Xavier could lend credence to rumors of Sadie Sink’s equally mysterious role in the movie being that of the psychic mutant Jean Grey.
The Marvel Comics version of the “Brand New Day” storyline also followed Peter Parker exploring a new status quo in the wake of a different reality-warping incident: He and Mary-Jane Watson sold their marriage to the demon Mephisto in exchange for saving the life of Aunt May (long story, please don’t ask). The film version appears to parallel this story in some ways, but is not a direct adaptation.
The trailer also appears to incorporate aspects of the 2005-2006 Spider-Man crossover story “The Other,” in which the titular hero finds his powers mutating in unexpected new ways.
“Spider-Man: Brand New Day” swings into theaters July 31.
