Lionsgate greenlights sequel to ‘The Housemaid’

Lionsgate has greenlit a sequel to “The Housemaid,” officially titled “Housemaid’s Secret,” the studio announced on social media.

The sequel will continue the story of Millie, played by Sydney Sweeney, and is based on “The Housemaid’s Secret,” the second book in Freida McFadden’s bestselling thriller series.

Paul Feig is set to return to direct the follow-up. The original film starred Amanda Seyfried, Brandon Sklenar, Michele Morrone and Sweeney, and followed Millie as she was hired to work for the secretive and volatile Winchester family.

Released Dec. 19, “The Housemaid” has become a box office success and currently holds a 91% “Verified Hot” audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

McFadden’s book series also includes a third installment, “The Housemaid Is Watching,” and a short story, “The Housemaid’s Wedding,” leaving the door open for additional adaptations.

Several other McFadden novels are also in development across Hollywood. “The Teacher” has been acquired by Apple Original Films, while “The Tenant” and “Dear Debbie” are in development with Amazon MGM Studios. “The Surrogate” has been acquired by Sony Pictures.

McFadden’s most recent novel, “The Intruder,” was released in October and became a New York Times bestseller.
