For more than 50 years, PBS has been bringing adaptations to the small screen through its Masterpiece anthology series.
While not all series and TV movies to be featured in the programming are adaptations, many are, including literary classics such as “Bleak House,” mysteries such as “Wallander” and political thrillers including 1990s’ “House of Cards.”
There have, of course, been several successful original programs, perhaps most notably “Downton Abbey,” many of which maintain the same literary traditions so revered by Masterpiece and PBS.
Here’s a look at upcoming Masterpiece programming. While Booked & Screened is all about adaptations, you’ll have to forgive us for including original series—we figure if you’re coming to us to keep up with Masterpiece, you’ll want to see it all. Most shows air first on your local PBS station before later streaming on the PBS Passport app.
We’ll keep this page up-to-date with the latest releases and series renewals, so make sure to bookmark!
‘Miss Scarlet’ Season 7
Streaming on PBS Passport Nov. 29, airing Jan. 17
The seventh and final season of the Victorian London-set “Miss Scarlet” will head to PBS’ Passport streaming platform on Nov. 29, more than a month before it airs on television starting Jan. 17. The series welcomes back Kate Phillips as Miss Scarlet, the first female private detective in London. It also stars Tom Durant-Pritchard and Cathy Belton. “Miss Scarlet is one of the rare Masterpiece offerings that’s not actually based on a book, but this year author Victoria Dowd wrote a novelization based on the show, “Miss Scarlet and the Duke: House of Mystery.”
‘All Creatures Great and Small’ Season 7
Airing Jan. 17
The period drama/comedy “All Creatures Great and Small” about the life of real veterinarian James Herriot (Nicholas Ralph) returns to PBS on Jan. 17. The seventh season hints at big changes for some of the show’s characters—James and Helen (Rachel Shenton)’s son, Jimmy, is starting school, while fellow veterinarian Siegfried Farnon (Samuel West) realizes he might be missing out on something right under his nose. The series is adapted from several books James Wight (who used the Herriot pen name) wrote about his veterinary practice. The series has also been renewed for an eighth season.
‘The Forsytes’ Season 2
Airing March 28
The second season of “The Forsytes” is expected to hit PBS Masterpiece programming March 28.
Returning is Joshua Orpin as the architect Soames Forsyte, who strikes up an affair with Irene, played by Millie Gibson. His cousin, the artist Jolyon Forsyte Jr. (Danny Griffin), meanwhile, has left society to start a family with his wife, Frances (Tuppence Middleton), the former governess.
“In Season 2, Soames is determined to take total control of the family empire, but holding onto the Forsyte name comes at a heavy cost,” a synopsis of the season reads. “Between Jolyon’s double life, bitter rivalries and secret rebellions, the family’s picture-perfect legacy is starting to fracture from the inside out.”
“The Forsytes” is an adaptation of John Galsworth’s “Forsyte Saga” novels.
Future projects
Several other series are in the works at Masterpiece going forward. “The Forsytes” has already been renewed for Season 3 and “Bookish” is getting a Christmas special in December and a second and third season. PBS is rebooting its early-2000s series “Monarch of the Glen,” adapted from the books by Compton Mackenzie; and will be bringing “Winter,” based on the book “Balthazar” by Clothilde Jamin and Clelia Constantine to the screen.
