Warning: Spoilers for “Dexter: Resurrection” Season 1 ahead:

The story

Dexter Morgan awakens from a coma after being shot by his son, Harrison, in the 2021 series “Dexter: New Blood.” He moves to New York City in “Dexter: Resurrection” to find Harrison and work on their relationship. While there, he gets a job driving a cab and learns of a new serial killer—Ronald “Red” Schmidt (Marc Menchaca), who targets rideshare drivers. He is known as “The Dark Passenger,” which is coincidentally what Dexter calls his urge to kill. He also learns of an eccentric billionaire, Leon Prater (Peter Dinklage), who invites serial killers to elaborate dinners at his mansion. The killers were played by an all-star cast, including Eric Stonestreet as Rapunzel, Krysten Ritter as Lady Vengeance, Neil Patrick Harris as The Tattoo Collector and David Dastmalchian as the Gemini Killer. Dexter pretends to be The Dark Passenger and crashes the parties.

Season 2 picks up three years after the first season. Dexter continues driving a cab and finds himself between the Five Borough Killer (Dan Stevens) and the New York Ripper (Brian Cox). Meanwhile, Harrison pursues a career in law enforcement and Dexter faces an unexpected challenge of his own—a midlife crisis.

The cast

Michael C. Hall stars as Dexter Morgan, a former blood-spatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department—and a serial killer. Dexter isn’t your typical serial killer; he follows a code his father created for him—to kill only other murderers.  The actor previously starred as David Fisher on “Six Feet Under.”

Jack Alcott plays Harrison Morgan, Dexter’s son, who becomes a New York City police officer and continues his pursuit of justice.

James Remar stars as Harry, Dexter’s adoptive father and the inventor of Dexter’s “code.”

Uma Thurman stars as Charley, a former Special Ops officer who worked as billionaire Leon Prater’s head of security. She fled New York in Season 1 but returns in the second season with unfinished business involving Dexter.

Brian Cox stars as the New York Ripper. The Emmy and Golden Globe-winner is best known as Logan Roy, the ruthless patriarch in “Succession.” Cox’s character is no longer actively killing, but continues to terrorize the survivors of his past murderous rampage.

Bokeem Woodbine, known for “Fargo,” stars as Capt. Mixon, a homicide captain.

Nona Parker Johnson stars as Capt. Mixon’s daughter Fiona Mixon, a homicide unit training officer who becomes Harrison’s love interest.

Eric Stonestreet returns as Al Walker, also known as Rapunzel, a serial killer who targets victims with ponytails and keeps their hair as trophies. Stonestreet is best known for playing Cameron Tucker on “Modern Family.”

Krysten Ritter returns as Mia LaPierre, also known as Lady Vengeance, a serial killer who targets sexual predators. She was a member of Leon Prater’s secret gathering of killers in Season 1. Ritter is known for starring in “Jessica Jones” and “Veronica Mars.”

Dan Stevens, known for “Downton Abbey,” stars as the Five Borough Killer, a serial killer who terrorizes New York by calling the police threatening to murder innocent people and then carrying out his threats.

Gabriel Luna, known for “The Last of Us,” stars as Ray Ballard, also known as the Sleepy-Eyed Stranger, a serial killer who appears in Season 2.

Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine, known for “Treme,” returns as Blessing Kamara, a rideshare driver who befriends Dexter and allows him to stay in his basement apartment.

Desmond Harrington returns as Lt. Joey Quinn, a Miami Metro Homicide detective from the original “Dexter” series. Harrington, also known for “Gossip Girl,” has been promoted to a series regular for Season 2.

Kadia Saraf returns as Detective Claudette Wallace, a New York City police detective.

Dominic Fumusa, known for “Nurse Jackie,” returns as Detective Melvin Oliva, a New York City police detective.

Behind the scenes

Dexter Morgan originated in Jeff Lindsay’s eight-book “Dexter” series. The first book, “Darkly Dreaming Dexter,” was published in 2004 and Season 1 of the series, which premiered on Showtime in 2006, closely followed the book’s story. Afterward, the series took on a life of its own. “Dexter” ran for eight seasons and was one of Showtime’s biggest hits.

Executive producer and showrunner Clyde Phillips ran the original series for its first four seasons and later returned to oversee the prequel, “Dexter: Original Sin,” which had a stacked cast including Patrick Gibson, Christian Slater, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Christina Milian and Patrick Dempsey. It was picked up for a second season, but Paramount reversed the decision four months later amid a corporate restructuring and shift in focus toward “Dexter: Resurrection.”

How to watch

“Dexter: Resurrection” Season 2 will premiere on Oct. 30 on Paramount+ Premium. Season 1 of “Dexter: Resurrection” is available to stream on Paramount+ Premium and the other series in the franchise are also available on Paramount+, although subscription requirements vary.

About the writer:

S.Lynn Bonanno loves “Dexter.” She doesn’t want to be basic, but Season 4 with the Trinity Killer is called the best for a reason. The finale of the original series scarred her for life for so many reasons. She now panics when a show she loves is coming to an end, worried about being disappointed (she’s talking to you, “Game of Thrones.”)
