5 book-to-screen adaptations to watch this weekend: ‘Other Mommy,’ more

“Other Mommy,” “Social Reckoning” and “Other Mommy,” “Social Reckoning” and “Pumpkinhead 2” are some of the book-to-screen adaptations arriving in theaters and on streaming apps this weekend.

‘Other Mommy,’ in theaters Friday

Jessica Chastain plays dual roles in the upcoming horror adaptation of Josh Malerman’s novel, “Incidents Around the House.” She plays Ursula, a perfectly ordinary suburban mom and the so-called “Other Mommy,” who looks exactly the same. The film also stars Arabella Olivia Clark as her daughter, Bela, along with Karen Allen. Rob Savage directs and Nathan Elston wrote the film, which hits theaters Oct. 9.

‘Social Reckoning,’ in theaters Friday

The film by Aaron Sorkin follows the events of 2010’s “The Social Network,” based on the 2009 book “The Accidental Billionaires: A Tale of Sex, Money, Genius, and Betrayal” by Ben Mezrich. It stars Jeremy Allen White, Jeremy Strong, Mikey Madison and Bill Burr. Sorkin wrote the scripts for both films. It premieres in theaters on Oct. 9.

‘A Prayer for the Dying,’ in theaters Friday

John C. Reilly and Jonny Flynn star as two men trying to protect their small Wisconsin town from a deadly epidemic that coincides with a spreading wildfire in “A Prayer for the Dying.” The film is an adaptation of the Western novel by Stewart O’Nan and also stars Kristine Kujath Thorp and Gustav Lindh. The drama was written and directed by Dara Van Dusen and hits theaters Oct. 9.

‘R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead 2,’ streaming Friday on Tubi

Bean Reid and Adeline Lo are returning for “R.L. Stine’s Pumpkinhead 2,” the sequel to 2025’s young adult horror film about a pumpkin-headed killer scarecrow. Joining them this time around is horror royalty, Cassandra Peterson—better known as Elvira. The film, directed by Jem Garrard, streams Oct. 9 on Tubi.

‘The Monster She Married,’ streaming Saturday on Lifetime

“The Monster She Married,” airing at 8 p.m. ET on Oct. 10, is based on John Griffith’s 2021 thriller novel “Fatal Prescription: A Doctor Without Remorse.” Jason Bourque is the screenwriter of the film, which was directed by Caitlin Sponheimer. The story follows Shelley (Molly Saunders), who marries her former pediatrician Joseph (“Glee” star Matthew Morrison). She  begins to realize she has been groomed her whole life after one of her husband’s teen patients is murdered just days before the girl is set to testify against him.
