A lot of eagerly anticipated adaptations announced casting news this past week, including “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo” series, “Fake Skating” and “The People v. Gorilla Grodd.”
David Oyelowo, Viola Prettejohn join ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’
On Thursday, casting was announced for the Sky Studios TV adaptation of Swedish author Stieg Larsson’s “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.” The series is described as a contemporary reimagining of the Nordic noir classic.
David Oyelowo (“Silo”) and Viola Prettejohn (“The Crown”) will star as journalist Mikael Blomkvist and hacker Lisbeth Salander. Reinaldo Marcus Green will direct the eight-part mystery thriller.
The story follows the pair as they investigate the disappearance of a woman who went missing 30 years ago. The novels were previously adapted into a Swedish film trilogy starring Michael Nyqvist and Noomi Rapace beginning in 2009 and into a 2011 U.S. film starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara.
‘Fake Skating’: Amelie Hoeferle, Graham Campbell to play Dani, Alec
Also, on Thursday, author Lynn Painter announced the stars of the adaptation of her bestselling romance “Fake Skating.” Amélie Hoeferle (“Sterling Point”) and Graham Campbell (“The Shards”) will play the hockey romance’s lead couple Dani and Alec. The Sony film is set to hit theaters July 16, Sony Pictures announced. The romantic-comedy book follows childhood sweethearts as they reunite in their hometown. Josh Boone is set to direct the film.
Painter said on Instagram, “You guys, I have been losing my freaking MIND ever since I saw this amazing duo’s chemistry read!!! Seriously, they are Dani/Alec PERFECTION – I cannot wait for you to see – and I am BEYOND excited they’re on-board.”
Painter’s young adult romantic-comedy “Better Than the Movies” is also being adapted, this time for Netflix. The film will star Beatrice Kitsos as high school senior Liz and David Iacono as Wes in what the streamer described as a “love letter to romantic comedies.”
Sara Gilbert joins ‘The People Vs. Gorilla Grodd’
“The Conners” star Sara Gilbert is joining Skyler Gisondo and Jimmy Tatro in HBO’s Superman character spinoff “The People v. Gorilla Grodd.” The half-hour comedy is from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television. The logline says: “A superintelligent ape is convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City. In an eight-part “true” crime docuseries, the Daily Planet’s Jimmy Olsen (Gisondo) reopens the case, investigating whether Gorilla Grodd (Tatro) was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis’ most famous murder trials.”
“Superman” actors Beck Bennett, Mikaela Hoover and Wendell Pierce star as Steve Lombard, Cat Grant and Perry White.
