For more than 50 years, PBS has been bringing adaptations to the small screen through its Masterpiece anthology series. 

While not all series and TV movies to be featured in the programming are adaptations, many are, including literary classics such as “Bleak House,” mysteries such as “Wallander” and political thrillers including 1990s’ “House of Cards.”

There have, of course, been several successful original programs, perhaps most notably “Downton Abbey,” many of which maintain the same literary traditions so revered by Masterpiece and PBS. 

Here’s a look at upcoming Masterpiece programming. While Booked & Screened is all about adaptations, you’ll have to forgive us for including original series—we figure if you’re coming to us to keep up with Masterpiece, you’ll want to see it all. Most shows air first on your local PBS station before later streaming on the PBS Passport app.

‘Maigret’ Season 2
Airing Oct. 18

The second season of “Maigret” is coming to PBS on Oct. 18. The series is an adaptation of the detective novels about French Detective Jules Maigret by Georges Simenon. The prolific Belgian author wrote 75 novels and 28 short stories about Maigret over the decades. The series stars Benjamin Wainwright (“The Sandman”) as the titular detective alongside Stefanie Martini, Nathalie Armin, Reda Elazouar, Blake Harrison, Kerrie Hayes and Shaniqua Okwok. Patrick Harbinson wrote and is one of the directors on the series.

‘The Gold’ Season 2
Airing Oct. 18

“The Gold” is a British drama centered on the real-life 1983 armed robbery of a Brink’s-Mat security depot at London Heathrow Airport. The series stars Hugh Bonneville (“Paddington”) as police DCS Brian Boyce and Jack Lowden (“Slow Horses”) as one of the robbers, Kenneth Noye. Created by Neil Forsyth, the second season of “The Gold” has already aired in Britain on BBC. It’s set to premiere on PBS on Oct. 18.

‘All Creatures Great and Small’ Season 7
Airing Jan. 17

The period drama/comedy “All Creatures Great and Small” about the life of real veterinarian James Herriot (Nicholas Ralph) returns to PBS on Jan. 17. The seventh season hints at big changes for some of the show’s characters—James and Helen (Rachel Shenton)’s son, Jimmy, is starting school, while fellow veterinarian Siegfried Farnon (Samuel West) realizes he might be missing out on something right under his nose. The series is adapted from several books James Wight (who used the Herriot pen name) wrote about his veterinary practice. The series has also been renewed for an eighth season.

Future projects

Several other series are in the works at Masterpiece going forward. “The Forsytes” has been renewed for both Season 2 and Season 3; “Miss Scarlett” is getting a seventh season; and “Bookish” is getting a Christmas special in December and a second and third season. PBS is rebooting its early-2000s series “Monarch of the Glen,” adapted from the books by Compton Mackenzie; and will be bringing “Winter,” based on the book “Balthazar” by Clothilde Jamin and Clelia Constantine to the screen.
