First look at Edward Bluemel as Hercule Poirot
On Friday, BritBox shared a photo of Edward Bluemel in character as Hercule Poirot, for his role in the new series “Hercule.” Now filming in Liverpool, the series will focus on three of Agatha Christie’s early stories. The full cast includes Henry Ashton, James D’Arcy, Calvin Demba, Phil Dunning, Jack Gleeson, Tamsin Greig, James Nesbitt, Guy Remmers, Rebecca Rittenhouse and Mawaan Rizwan.
HBO Max orders DC Studios’ ‘The People V. Gorilla Grodd’
HBO Max announced Friday it gave a series order to a new half-hour comedy “The People V. Gorilla Grodd” from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Television. Skyler Gisondo will star as Jimmy Olsen, with Jimmy Tatro as Gorilla Grodd, and “Superman” actors Beck Bennett as Steve Lombard, Mikaela Hoover as Cat Grant, and Wendell Pierce as Perry White. The logline says: “A superintelligent ape is convicted of murdering his father, the King of Gorilla City. In an eight-part “true” crime docuseries, the Daily Planet’s Jimmy Olsen reopens the case, investigating whether Gorilla Grodd was wrongly convicted in one of Metropolis’ most famous murder trials.”
‘Please Save My Earth’ coming to Prime Video
Prime Video announced its new series “Please Save My Earth” on Friday. It is a live-action adaptation of Saki Hiwatari’s manga, which debuted in 1986. Alice Hirose will star as Mokuren, with Takahiro Miki directing. The story centers on a high school student, Arisu Sakaguchi, who has dreams of a past life on a lunar base. Her classmates share these same memories. In addition, her neighbor wakes up in a past life.
“Whenever I was asked which manga I’d most like to adapt, my answer was always ‘Please Save My Earth,’” said Miki. The series will premiere in fall 2027.
‘The One Piece’ anime series shares visual
On Thursday, the social media accounts for “The One Piece” shared a new visual from the upcoming anime series. The image shows the beginning of Monkey D. Luffy’s journey, with the caption, “The ‘Dawn of Adventure’ We Can’t Wait For.” The series, based on Eiichiro Oda’s popular “One Piece” manga, will retell the East Blue Saga with new animation from WIT Studio and is expected to debut on Netflix in 2027.
It is one of several recent and upcoming “One Piece” screen projects. “One Piece: Heroines,” a special anime episode centered on Nami, premiered July 5 and is streaming on Crunchyroll. The two-part animated “Lego One Piece” special, which retells events from the first two seasons of Netflix’s live-action series, premieres Sept. 29. The live-action series will return in 2027 for Season 3, titled “One Piece: The Battle of Alabasta.”
Netflix and AMC Studios order ‘Bannerman’
Netflix and AMC Studios greenlit “Bannerman” on Thursday. The drama is based on the popular spy novels by John R. Maxim. The series centers on covert operative Paul Bannerman, who retires to a quiet suburban town, but is pulled back into danger. In addition, his girlfriend’s father, a former NYPD officer, seems to know that Paul is not who he says he is.
Craig Silverstein will serve as showrunner, write and executive produce “Bannerman” with Shane Black, who co-wrote the premiere and will direct the first two episodes.
Karla Crome, Josiah Green-Mhlanga and Tom Stourton join ‘You Are Here’
BBC said Thursday that Karla Crome, Josiah Green-Mhlanga and Tom Stourton are joining Claire Foy and Matthew Macfadyen in “You Are Here.” The series is an eight-part adaptation of David Nicholls’ novel of the same name. Nicholls, author of “One Day,” has also written the adaptation, which will be directed by Lenny Abrahamson. Macfadyen and Foy star as Michael and Marnie, who meet through a friend and go off on a walk together. Sparks fly.
Nicholls says: “The intention with the novel was to write a close-up study of a relationship, but set against this magnificent landscape, and that’s our ambition here too; to make something both intimate and epic, funny and dramatic, a romantic comedy with real emotion. We can’t wait to bring Marnie and Michael’s journey to the screen.”
‘Hunting Wives’: first look, premiere date
On Wednesday, Netflix released a first look at the second season of “The Hunting Wives” and announced its Nov. 26 release date. The thriller is based on the 2022 book of the same name by May Cobb. It follows city girl Sophie (Brittany Snow) who moves to East Texas and gets ensnared in some local Southern drama—and a romance with Margo (Malin Akerman). Dermot Mulroney and Karen Rodriguez also star.
‘Kill Jackie’ gets premiere date
AMC+ shared teaser art and an Oct. 2 premiere date for “Kill Jackie.” Catherine Zeta-Jones stars in the revenge series, which is based on the novel “The Price You Pay” by Nick Harkaway, who wrote under the pseudonym Aidan Truhen.
The description from AMC reads: “Kill Jackie follows Jackie Price (Zeta-Jones), who has spent the last twenty years living a quiet, luxurious existence selling fine art while remaining anonymous after escaping a criminal past. Her carefully constructed world is shattered when she discovers that The Seven Demons, a squad of ruthless assassins, have been hired to kill her. Jackie will need to unleash her old instincts and execute a dangerous plan to take down the Demons.”
