This week, a bunch of books took their first big steps toward the screen. Here’s a roundup of the teasers and trailers that dropped this week.

‘Wicker’

Black Bear Pictures released a trailer Thursday for the fantasy-comedy “Wicker,” starring Olivia Colman as a fisherwoman who has a husband made out of wicker played by Alexander Skarsgård. The film, which is set to hit U.S. theaters Oct. 23, also stars Elizabeth Debicki, Peter Dinklage and Richard E. Grant. It’s an adaptation of “The Wicker Husband,” a short story by author Ursula Wills-Jones. 

“When her wicker husband proves more spectacular than she ever imagined, his soulful spirit and unique prowess awaken something inside her, setting off a wave of jealousy, fascination and upheaval that threatens the very fabric of village life,” a synopsis of the film reads. 

‘Jumanji: Open World’

Worlds collide in the first trailer released Tuesday for “Jumanji: Open World,” the third film in the action-comedy reboot. The film sees the four heroes of the gaming world—Dr. Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson), Professor Shelly (Jack Black), Mouse Finbar (Kevin Hart) and Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan)—suddenly thrown into the real world. Spencer (Alex Wolff), Martha (Morgan Turner), Fridge (Ser’Sarius Blain) and Bethany (Madison Iseman) must figure out how to get the four characters back into Jumanji. This time, Spencer’s mom, Janice (Marin Hinkle), her beau Donatas (Dan Hildebrand) and youngster Tyson (Jack Jewkes) come along for the ride. 

“Jumanji: Open World” is the third and final installment of the “Jumanji” reboot trilogy. Based on the children’s books by Chris Van Allsburg, the story was first brought to screen in 1995’s “Jumanji” with the sequel “Zathura: A Space Adventure” coming out in 2005. 

‘S&X’

Netflix on Tuesday released the trailer for its new Japanese drama series about a sex educator, “S&X.” Adapted from the manga “S&X: The Confession of Therapist Ichito Shimotori” by Motoo Tada, the series stars Kento Nakajima as Ichito, a sex educator and therapist who deals with patients with all manner of sex-related concerns and problems. 

“Even when he’s met with snickers and prejudice, Shimotori handles each patient with sincerity and unwavering care through counseling,” a synopsis of the series reads. “Yet he, too, secretly carries his own unresolved pain.”

Shogo Kusano directs the series, which also stars Yuko Araki. It premieres on the streaming service Aug. 20. 

‘Children of Blood & Bone’

Zélie Adeola, played by Thuso Mbedu, learns about her magical history in the first full-length trailer for the Afrofuturistic “Children of Blood and Bone,” released Tuesday. The film is an adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s novel of the same name.

The young adult romantasy also stars Amandla Stenberg, Damson Idris, Tosin Cole, Cynthia Erivo, Chiwetel Ejofor, Lashana Lynch, Idris Elba and Viola Davis. Adeyemi’s debut Afrofuturistic novel is the first in her “Legacy of Orïsha” trilogy of books. It is set to be released Jan. 15, 2027. 

‘The Last Sunrise’

“The Last Sunrise” premieres Aug. 26 on Prime Video. Based on the novel of the same name by Anna Todd, the story follows college student Ry (Maia Reficco), who lives with a chronic illness and travels to Mallorca with her mother (Eva Longoria).

In the trailer Tuesday, Ry finds new friends and meets Julián (Fernando Lindez) and starts a romance, hiding her health condition.   

‘Reacher’ S4 

Season 4 of “Reacher” is based on the 13th book in Lee Child’s series, “Gone Tomorrow.” Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) meets a stranger on the subway and is drawn into a complicated game that could have deadly consequences.

Sydelle Noel, Chris Marquette, AGNEZ MO, Anggun, Kevin Weisman, Marc Blucas, Kevin Corrigan and Kathleen Robertson join the cast this season. Season 4 premieres on Prime Video on Aug. 12.

‘Neagley’

Maria Sten stars as Frances Neagley in the new series, based on the character from Lee Child’s “Reacher” novels. Neagley is a private investigator in Chicago and was in the military with Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson). In this new series, she learns of a friend’s death and aims to find out what really happened.

The trailer is action-packed with badass Neagley running, fighting, making sarcastic jabs and lighting things on fire. Ritchson also makes appearances. It streams Sept. 16 on Prime Video.

‘Carrie’

Summer Howell stars as the iconic blood-drenched prom queen Carrie White on Mike Flanagan’s adaptation of Stephen King’s debut 1974 novel, “Carrie.” While the story has been the subject of a handful of adaptations over the past five decades, filmmaker Mike Flanagan is behind the first television series based on the novel.

In the teaser, released July 25, a heartbroken and angry Carrie confronts the bullies who pretended to be her friends. It premieres Oct. 7 on Prime Video.

‘Dark Matter’ Season 2

Season 2 of sci-fi series “Dark Matter” continues the story of Jason Dessen (Joel Edgerton), a scientist and professor who is abducted into an alternate version of his life.

Jennifer Connelly plays Daniela, Jason’s wife, and Oakes Fegley plays their son. Daniela expresses her fear to Jason in the trailer and he continues to learn about “the box” and the other versions of himself. It premieres Aug, 28 on Apple TV.

‘Neuromancer’

Callum Turner stars as Case, “the best console man around” in “Neuromancer.” In the trailer for the upcoming Apple TV cyberpunk series, Case tells his partner Molly (Briana Middleton) that he steals data and the pair are tasked with carrying out a high-stakes heist.

“Neuromancer” is based on the 1984 novel by William Gibson. The series also stars Marc Menchaca, Peter Sarsgaard and Max Irons. J.D. Dillard and Graham Roland are creators and writers of the show, which will premiere Jan. 22. 

‘Yaga’

Carrie-Anne Moss gives a brief lesson about the folk character Baba Yaga in AMC’s first teaser trailer for “Yaga.” Moss plays Katherine, a university professor who appears to have an affair with Hudson Williams’ Henry Park, whose disappearance is at the center of the thriller-mystery.

The trailer, which premiered July 25, introduces scenes from the eight-episode series as Katherine explains the myth of Baba Yaga, a Slavic folk character likened to a witch. “Based on the hit play by showrunner and writer Kat Sandler, ‘Yaga’ follows Rapp (Noah Reid), a private investigator who arrives in a small coastal town to investigate the disappearance of a young heir to a powerful fishery, Henry Park (Williams),” a synopsis of the series reads. It will premiere in October on AMC+.

‘Queen of the Damned’

AMC Global Media has renewed “Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire” for a fourth season, which will be titled “Anne Rice’s Queen of the Damned.” Dan McDermott, CCO of AMC Global Media and President of AMC Studios said: “We can’t wait to continue the journey with ‘Queen of the Damned,’ one of the most iconic stories in Anne Rice’s mythology, and watch our established and beloved characters confront Akasha with their world, and ours, very much hanging in the balance.”

The teaser shows Sheila Atim as Mother of All Vampires Akasha, telling women to gather and kill all men and shows crowds of women marching in the streets waving flags and yelling. Akasha yells, “I am the answer!”
