Legendary actor Sam Neill died on July 13. He was 78.
Best known for his role in the “Jurassic Park” franchise, Neill also starred in films including “Dead Calm,” “The Hunt for Red October” and more recently the Peacock adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s novel “Apples Never Fall.”
Throughout his career, the New Zealand actor appeared in numerous films and television series adapted from novels.
In 1978, he starred alongside Judy Davis in “My Brilliant Career,” based on the 1901 novel by Miles Franklin. He played Harry Beecham, one of Davis’ character’s love interests.
Neill also starred as real-life Russian spy Sydney Reilly in the 1983 British TV series “Reilly, Ace of Spies,” based on the 1967 book “Ace of Spies” by Robin Bruce Lockhart.
The actor starred opposite Nicole Kidman in 1989’s “Dead Calm,” based on Charles Williams’ 1963 psychological thriller novel of the same name. He portrayed Royal Australian Navy Captain John Ingram.
He took on another military role in 1990’s “The Hunt for Red October,” adapted from Tom Clancy’s 1984 novel. Neill played Capt. Vasily Borodin, the executive officer aboard the Soviet submarine commanded by Marko Ramius (Sean Connery).
In 1994, Neill starred as a British military officer in Disney’s live-action adaptation of Rudyard Kipling’s “The Jungle Book.” He played Colonel Geoffrey Brydon, the father of lead Kitty (Lena Headey).
One of his most iconic literary roles came in 1993’s “Jurassic Park,” based on Michael Crichton’s best-selling 1990 novel. Neill starred as paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant a role he reprised in 2001’s “Jurassic Park III” and again in 2022’s “Jurassic World Dominion.”
He later joined the cast of 1998’s “The Horse Whisperer,” adapted from Nicholas Evans’ 1995 novel. Neill portrayed Robert MacLean, the husband of Annie MacLean (Kristin Scott Thomas) and stepfather to Grace (Scarlett Johansson).
Also in 1998, Neill starred as the wizard Merlin in an eponymous miniseries and its 2006 sequel, “Merlin’s Apprentice,” which were inspired by tales of Camelot and Arthurian legend.
Neill also appeared in 1999’s “Bicentennial Man,” based on Isaac Asimov and Robert Silverberg’s 1992 novel “The Positronic Man.” He played Richard Martin opposite robot Andrew (Robin Williams).
In 2010, Neill voiced great grey owl Allomere in the animated fantasy film “Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole” based on the early 2000’s “Guardians of Ga’Hoole” book series by Kathryn Lasky.
The New Zealander, a known animal lover, also appeared in “Peter Rabbit” (2018), based on Beatrix Potter’s 1902 book “The Tale of Peter Rabbit.” Neill played Mr. McGregor and also voiced the badger Tommy Brock.
He also had small roles in 2017’s “Thor Ragnarok” and 2022’s “Thor: Love and Thunder” as an actor playing Odin in a play.
In 2024, Neill starred as Stan Delaney in Peacock’s limited series “Apples Never Fall,” based on Liane Moriarty’s novel. He starred opposite Annette Bening as a retired tennis coach whose family’s secrets begin to unravel after his wife disappears.
The star also released a memoir titled “Did I Ever Tell You This?” in 2023. It covered his 40-plus years as an actor, his experience receiving chemotherapy for blood cancer and life as an owner of a winery.
Neill brought warmth and authority to adaptations spanning science fiction, thrillers, literary fiction, children’s classics and contemporary novels.
