The pipeline from page to screen shows no signs of slowing. Here’s a quick look at the latest adaptation announcements, casting updates and projects in development.
FX releases ‘The Shards’ poster
FX on Tuesday shared an official poster for its upcoming series “The Shards,” an adaptation of the Bret Easton Ellis semi-autobiographical novel of the same name. The poster shows five members of the young cast underwater—Igby Rigney (“The Fall of the House of Usher”), Hayes Warner, Graham Campbell (“Late Fame”), Kaia Gerber (“Palm Royale”) and Homer Gere.
“The Shards,” which started out as a serialized audiobook in 2023, is a story about Bret (Rigney) set in 1980s Los Angeles. The horror story follows wealthy teens at a prep school who have everything they could want—fancy cars, access to drugs and the craziest parties. But when new student Robert (Gere) joins the group, suspicions begin to mount. The series premieres on Hulu on Aug. 5.
Apple TV gives first look at ‘Nocturne’ series
Apple TV on Tuesday released two first-look photos from its upcoming crime drama series “Nocturne.” Starring Liev Schreiber (“The Perfect Couple”), Zazie Beetz (“Deadpool 2”) and Stephen Graham (“Greyhound”), the series is an adaptation of two novels by Lars Kepler—“Lazarus” and “Sandman.”
“The project tells the story of Jonah Lynn (Schreiber), an ex-soldier turned homicide detective who, tired of working the tough streets of Philadelphia, moves to a small town in western Pennsylvania for a quiet life,” a synopsis of the series reads. “But, as the town and his family come under attack from the diabolically cunning serial killer Jurek Walter (Graham), Jonah must protect all that he holds dear. When the desperate search for Jurek’s last missing victim forces Jonah to send his surrogate daughter, FBI Agent Saga Bauer (Beetz), up against Jurek, how far will Jonah go?”
Rowan Joffé (“Brighton Rock”) adapted the two Kepler books for the series and John Hlavin serves as showrunner. The series is set to debut Oct. 30.
Casting announced for ‘The Cadburys’
BritBox announced Tuesday that production has started on its new period drama series “The Cadburys,” an adaptation of Deborah Cadbury’s book “Chocolate Wars.” The family drama tells the story of the Cadbury family, inventors of what is now one of the most recognizable chocolate brands in the world. Harry Gilby will play George Cadbury, Toby Regbo is Richard Cadbury and Jessica Barden is Maria Cadbury. The series will also star Pearce Quigley, Ben Hardy, Joanna Scanlan and Poppy Gilbert. Chloë Mi Lin Ewart (“All Creatures Great & Small”) wrote the script and Tom McKay is directing.
Two adaptations to have world premieres at TIFF
The Toronto International Film Festival announced Tuesday that two adaptations will have their world premieres at this year’s event—“Prima Facie” and “Being Heumann.”
“Being Heumann,” an adaptation of Judith Heumann’s autobiographical “Being Heumann: An Unrepentant Memoir of a Disability Rights Activist,” will screen on the opening night of the festival, Sept. 10. The film stars Ruth Madeley (as Heumann), Mark Ruffalo and Dylan O’Brien and is directed by Sian Heder.
“Prima Facie” is a film version of Suzie Miller’s play of the same name. It stars Cynthia Erivo, Daniel Ings and Simon Russell Beale and tells the story of Tessa (Erivo), a barrister as she’s affected by the actions of a colleague. No theatrical releases have been announced for either film.
Teen drama ‘Crookhaven’ gets second season
The BBC announced Tuesday that it’s commissioned a second season of “Crookhaven,” based on a series of young adult books by JJ Arcanjo. Crookhaven is a school for young crooks and thieves attended by pickpocket Gabriel (Lucas Leach) and Penelope (Carmel Laniado). The series also stars Dougray Scott (“Ever After”) as Penelope’s father and the school’s headmaster, Caspian. The first season premiered in March 2026 and the second season is expected in 2027.
John Goodman joins ‘Skeletons’ cast
John Goodman “The Monuments Men” is joining Brie Larson “Lessons in Chemistry” in the forthcoming adaptation of the short story “Skeletons” by Philiip Fracassi, Deadline reported Tuesday. Fracassi confirmed the news in a post on Instagram. Brian Duffield wrote the screenplay with revisions by JT Mollner, who is also directing.
“Skeletons” tells the story of a young boy who learns his parents are hiding a disturbing secret about his mother.
Casting announced for new Harlan Coben adaptation ‘Myron Bolitar’
Netflix announced Monday that Colin Woodell (“The Call of the Wild”), KJ Apa (“Riverdale”) and Diane Guerrero (“The Lincoln Lawyer”) will star in its new series “Myron Bolitar.” The show is an adaptation of the Harlan Coben book series that began with 1995’s “Deal Breaker.” Netflix posted a photo of the cover of the second book in the series—“Drop Shot”—in its announcement, however.
“After an injury ends his NBA dreams, Myron Bolitar (Woodell) reinvents himself as a sports agent—using charm, smarts and a ruthless partner to navigate the high-stakes and dirty world of sports, where saving his clients often means risking himself,” a synopsis of the series reads.
Greg Yaitanes (“Lucky”) is set to direct the series, which was written by David E. Kelley (“Bonfire of the Vanities”) and Kyle Long (“Bosch: Legacy”).
New adaptation of ‘My Brilliant Career’ heading to Netflix
Netflix announced Sunday that its adaptation of Miles Franklin’s novel “My Brilliant Career” will premiere on the streaming service in August. The six-part Australian drama stars Philippa Northeast (“The Family Next Door”), Christopher Chung (“Slow Horses”) and Genevieve O’Reilly (“The Snowman”) and tells the story of a young girl growing up in the early 1900s, wanting to become a writer. Liz Doran (“Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries”) wrote and developed the series. A 1979 film adaptation of the novel starred Judy Davis (“A Passage to India”) and Sam Neill (“Jurassic World: Dominion”).
“Sybylla doesn’t want a husband, she wants a story worth telling, and she’ll break every rule to write it,” a synopsis reads. “Meet the young woman writing her way out of the expectations of 1900.”
‘Delicious in Dungeon’ Season 2 to be released in October
Netflix announced Saturday that the second season of the anime series “Delicious in Dungeon” will debut in October. The streamer also revealed new teaser art for the show, which is adapted from the manga series by Ryoko Kui. The series features the voices of Kentarô Kumagai, Sayaka Senbongi and Asuna Tomari, and is directed by Yoshihiro Miyajima.
“The newly revealed teaser art offers the first glimpse at what lies ahead—a chimerified Falin under the control of the Lunatic Magician Thistle, and the party descending to the deepest reaches of the dungeon in a desperate bid to save her,” Netflix said in a synopsis.
