This week, a bunch of books took their first big steps toward the screen. Here’s a roundup of the teasers and trailers that dropped this week.

‘Sakamoto Days’ Season 2

Anime series “Sakamoto Days” is returning in January with a second season for which Netflix released a teaser trailer. The action series based on Yuto Suzuki’s manga is about a former hitman, Taro Sakamoto. The teaser shows Sakamoto and Shim as they prepare to infiltrate JCC, Japan’s assassin training institution to learn more about the elusive X. A specific release date for the series hasn’t been announced.

‘Victoria of Many Faces’

A new teaser trailer for “Victoria of Many Faces” highlights some of the supporting cast members of  the anime series. The series is an adaptation of the light novels of the same name by author Syuu. The series follows former spy Chloe as she tries to rebuild her life as an ordinary citizen named Victoria. 

“However, Victoria’s peaceful life is abruptly cut short as she begins to get involved with many people,” a synopsis of the series reads. “In this new land, her experiences and abilities from her days as a spy come in far more useful than she never expected!”

The series is expected to stream July 7 on Crunchyroll.

‘The Samurai and the Prisoner’

Janus Films has released its U.S. trailer for the Kiyoshi Kurasawa film “The Samurai and the Prisoner.” The film, based on the novel of the same name by Honobu Yonezawa, had its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in France in May. The Japanese film tells the story of a samurai tasked with solving the mystery of a murder as he’s holed up inside a castle amid a rebellion. The film stars Masahiro Motoki, Masaki Suda and Yuriko Yoshitaka. No U.S. release date has been announced.

‘Sense and Sensibility’

The trailer for the latest adaptation of Jane Austen’s 1811 novel “Sense and Sensibility” dropped Thursday. It stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Esmé Creed-Miles as sisters Elinor and Marianne Dashwood. The story follows the Dashwood sisters, who, after their father dies, are left without money and a home. They move to Devonshire, where they navigate class differences, a new life in the countryside and romance.

Caitríona Balfe, George MacKay and Fiona Shaw also star in the 2026 version, with Georgia Oakley directing for Focus Features. It premieres in theaters on Oct. 16.

‘Ransom Canyon’ Season 2

In the trailer for Season 2 of Netflix’s “Ransom Canyon”—released Thursday—Quinn O’Grady (Minka Kelly) returns to the western town after spending six months working as a concert pianist in New York City. 

Quinn doesn’t return alone—she has a new man, much to rancher Staten Kirkland’s (Josh Duhamel) surprise. The pair got together in Season 1, after decades of longing. The relationship didn’t last long as Staten still wasn’t over the loss of his wife and son years earlier. 

The series is based on the books by Jodi Thomas.

“Ransom Canyon” Season 2 premieres July 23 on Netflix.

‘Practical Magic 2’

The second trailer for the sequel to the 1998 romantasy film “Practical Magic” dropped Wednesday. Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman return in “Practical Magic 2” as sisters Sally and Gillian Owens. The Owens women are bound by a family curse that dooms the men who love them.

Joey King stars as Kylie, who learns of the family curse and goes off to try to reverse it. The sisters have to work together to find her. Stockard Channing and Dianne Wiest return as aunts Frances and Jet Owens. Lee Pace, Maisie Williams, Xolo Maridueña and Solly McLeod also star.

Susanne Bier is directing the sequel from a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman, Georgia Pritchett and Kelly Marcel. It is produced by Denise Di Novi, Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman. The executive producers are Donald Sabourin, Alice Hoffman, Andrew A. Kosove and Broderick Johnson. The film will arrive in theaters on Sept. 11.

‘Fool Night’

Netflix released the first teaser trailer for its upcoming anime series “Fool Night,” adapted from the manga by Kasumi Yasuda. Director Atsushi Yukawa is helming the project, which tells of a dystopian future in which most of Earth’s plant life has died after thick clouds permanently block the sun. To provide humans the oxygen they need to survive, a new technology is created to transform people near death into plants in a process called Transfloration. 

“A young man, Toshiro Kamiya, lives in poverty and works hard to pay taxes, cover living expenses and afford medication for his mentally ill mother,” a synopsis of the series reads. “However, the cruel reality around him gradually eats away at his hope. 

“Should he continue living as a human being, or cast off his suffering and start a new life as a plant?”

The series is set to stream on Netflix sometime in 2026.

‘Marble Hall Murders’

PBS’ Masterpiece released a trailer for its third and final series based on Anthony Horowitz’s mysteries—“Marble Hall Murders.” The six-episode series stars Lesley Manville as Susan Ryeland, an editor at the heart of the series of books, and Tim McMullan. Susan is tasked with editing a novel in the fictional Atticus Pund series of books. 

“But when the assignment draws her into another very real murder case, Susan soon finds herself cast as a suspect,” a synopsis reads. Masterpiece previously aired series based on and named after the first two books in the series—“Magpie Murders” in 2022 and “Moonflower Murders” in 2024. The new series is set to premiere on PBS on Sept. 6.

‘The Ribbon Hero’

Netflix released another trailer for its new anime, “The Ribbon Hero,” adapted from the classic anime “Princess Knight” by Osamu Tezuka. The story “follows Sapphire as she overcomes loss and trauma to protect those she holds dear,” a synopsis of the film reads. The film premieres August 8.

‘The One Piece’

Netflix is expanding its “One Piece” universe with a trailer for its forthcoming animated series based on the popular manga. The series is expected to hit the streamer in February 2027 (and the third season of the live-action series, subtitled “The Battle of Alabasta,” will be released sometime in 2027). “The One Piece” starts at the very beginning of Luffy’s tale in the manga’s East Blue saga. A specific release date for the series hasn’t been announced.

‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ Season 2

Prime Video released the official trailer for Season 2 of the animated series “Batman: Caped Crusader.” All 10 episodes of “Batman: Caped Crusader” will premiere on July 31. Earlier this month, the streamer also shared first-look images and introduced characters Edward Nygma, Carrie Kelly and Roxy Rocket.

“‘Batman: Caped Crusader’ is a hard-boiled animated series that follows the fearsome vigilante in his early years,” a synopsis of the series reads. “Forged in the fire of tragedy, billionaire Bruce Wayne becomes something both more and less than human—the BATMAN.”
