Coming to the screen: Week of May 18

‘Jack Ryan: Ghost War’
Streaming May 20 on Prime Video

Jack Ryan is pulled away from his civilian desk job and back into the world of secrecy in the new trailer for “Jack Ryan: Ghost War.” Ryan, played by John Krasinski, discovers suspicious bank transfers, leading him on “a deadly game of cat and mouse throughout Europe and the Middle East, with a rising terrorist figurehead preparing for a massive attack against the U.S. and her allies.”

In the film, Ryan teams up with CIA operative Mike November (Michael Kelly), CIA boss James Greer (Wendell Pierce) and MI6 officer Emma Marlowe (Sienna Miller).

The story is inspired by Tom Clancy’s characters, but is not directly based on one of his books. Aaron Rabin and Krasinski wrote the thriller from a story by Krasinski and Noah Oppenheim. Andrew Bernstein directed the film.

Several actors have played the character of Jack Ryan through the years, including Alec Baldwin in 1990’s “The Hunt for Red October,” Harrison Ford in 1992’s “Patriot Games” and 1994’s “Clear and Present Danger,” Ben Affleck in 2002’s “The Sum of All Fears” and Chris Pine in 2014’s “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit.”

Krasinski first took on the role in Prime Video’s “Jack Ryan” TV series in 2018. It ran for four seasons.

Only one adaptation hits the screen this week, but next week picks back up with “Summerwater,” “Spider-Noir,” “A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder” Season 2, “Pressure” and John Travolta’s “Propeller One-Way Night Coach.”
