I know, I know—the first rule of “Fight Club” is not to talk about “Fight Club.” But I can’t follow that this time. A remastered 4K Ultra HD version of the hit film is back in limited theaters starting tomorrow—though how long it sticks around depends on where you are—and a 4K UHD, Blu-ray and DVD re-release will follow on May 12.
New Regency and 20th Century Studios announced in October 2024, on the film’s 25th anniversary, that director David Fincher was supervising a remastered 4K Ultra HD edition of the 1999 classic.
The story, adapted from Chuck Palahniuk’s 1996 novel, follows Ed Norton’s character, a disgruntled white-collar worker who connects with Brad Pitt’s Tyler Durden, a soap salesman. The two take out their frustrations by forming a Fight Club, with eight very strict rules. Helena Bonham Carter stars as love interest Marla, and Jared Leto and Meat Loaf also star.
Although it did not perform well at the box office, it drew a cult following after its DVD release and its popularity soared.
It is hard to imagine anyone else in these roles, but in interviews it has been said that Janeane Garofalo was originally cast as Marla and that the studio was pushing for Matt Damon or Sean Penn for the Narrator role.
Check your local theater to see if it’s playing near you.
