“The House in the Cerulean Sea” won awards, became a bestseller and built a loyal fan base, many of whom are eager for its upcoming animated adaptation.

TJ Klune’s fantasy novel has also inspired fanfiction and an outpouring of vibrant fan art, thanks to its unforgettable cast of characters.

The story follows government worker Linus Baker, who is assigned to investigate a home for magical children run by the mysterious Arthur Parnassus.

Linus, who prides himself on being normal and a rule-follower, begins to question everything he thought he knew.

The novel was followed by the 2024 sequel “Somewhere Beyond the Sea,” which explores Arthur’s past and introduces new characters.

Linus Baker—a caseworker for the Department in Charge of Magical Youth (DICOMY). He is sent to investigate Arthur’s orphanage and begins to bond with the residents, which opens his mind.

Arthur Parnassus—the unusual head of the orphanage for magical children. He encourages the children to embrace who they are. His own past harbors more than a few surprises.

Zoe Chapelwhite—an adult island sprite. She works alongside Arthur to keep the children safe.

Chauncey—a green, blob-like creature with tentacles whose dream in life is to be a bellhop. Enthusiastic and honest, he is this writer’s favorite character.

Lucy (Lucifer)—a hilarious young boy who is also the Antichrist. A music lover, he is prone to nightmares.

Talia—a fierce, bearded garden gnome with a deep love of gardening and a tendency to threaten to bury anyone who annoys her.

Sal—a shy teenage boy who involuntarily transforms into a small dog when he gets nervous. He and Theodore are close friends.
