This week, a bunch of books took their first big steps toward the screen. Here’s a roundup of the teasers and trailers that dropped this week.
‘The House of the Spirits’
Prime Video released the first trailer for its new adaptation of Isabel Allende’s “The House of the Spirits.” It’s the first Spanish-language adaptation of the novel, perhaps one of the most iconic examples of the magical realism genre. The series stars Alfonso Herrera, Nicole Wallace and Dolores Fonzi. It debuts on Prime Video starting April 29.
‘The Sheep Detectives’
Amazon MGM Studios released the latest trailer for its new comedy, “The Sheep Detectives.” The film stars Hugh Jackman as George, a shepherd who loves reading detective stories to his sheep. But when a mystery occurs on the farm, the sheep jump into action to try to solve the crime. The film also stars Nicholas Braun, Nicholas Galitzine, Emma Thompson, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O’Dowd, Regina Hall, Patrick Stewart, Bella Ramsey and Rhys Darby. It arrives in theaters May 8.
‘The Wizard of the Kremlin’
Paul Dano, Jude Law and Alicia Vikander star in the trailer for a new film about future Russian President Vladimir Putin and his propaganda expert, Vadim Baranov. “The Wizard of the Kremlin” is based on the book by the same name by Giuliano Da Empoli, who wrote the script alongside director Olivier Assayas and Emmanuel Carrère. The film, which also stars Jeffrey Wright and Tom Sturridge, hits theaters April 17.
‘Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe’
Netflix released the trailer for the U.S. release of “Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway: The Sorcery of Nymph Circe.” It’s the second film in the “Hathaway’s Flash” trilogy, an adaptation of the Japanese novels by Yoshiyuki Tomino. The film picks up 12 years after the first offering in the trilogy, centering Hathaway Noa as he attempts to rebel against the authoritarian government. The animated feature releases on Netflix on May 15.
‘Pressure’
World War II—and the weather—are the focus of the Andrew Scott-led film “Pressure.” The film tells the story of the meteorologist responsible for making sure the Allied powers chose the correct time to launch the D-Day attack to end the war. The film is an adaptation of the David Haig stage play by the same name. It also stars Brendan Fraser and Damian Lewis and hits theaters May 29.
‘Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia’
The first trailer for the anime series “Jaadugar: A Witch in Mongolia” introduced the cast—Miyu Irino, Jun Saito and Skira Sekine. The series tells the story of a Sitara, who is sold into slavery in the 13th century but devotes her life to the pursuit of knowledge. Later in her story she plots to get her revenge on those who have taken everything from her. The series doesn’t yet have a U.S. release date, but is premiering in Japan in July.
‘Secret Service’
Gemma Arterton stars in the new trailer for an upcoming spy thriller series set to air later this year on ITV. She plays a British intelligence officer who learns a powerful politician may, in fact, be a Russian spy. “Secret Service,” based on the novel by Tom Bradby, also stars Rafe Spall and Alex Kingston.
