DC Studios on Wednesday released a full trailer for upcoming horror film “Clayface,” which tells the origin story of the DC Comics supervillain.
“Clayface,” directed by James Watkins, stars Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, the man who goes on to become the Batman foe Clayface.
“Matt Hagen’s meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss’s actions leave him horribly disfigured,” the official synopsis reads.
“Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self… but also unexpectedly affects his grip on reality, spiraling him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge.”
The trailer features scenes of Hagen having trouble controlling the shape-changing abilities he receives, including having to cut his own eyelids open in an airplane restroom.
Naomi Ackie also appears in the trailer as the person who administers the procedure and attempts to help Hagen deal with his transformation. David Dencik, Max Minghella, Eddie Marsan, Nancy Carroll and Joshua James also star.
“Clayface,” written by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, is the first R-rated horror movie to come out of DC Studios. The film is part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe, setting it in the same continuity as Gunn’s 2025 “Superman” film and this year’s “Supergirl.”
The DCU version of “Clayface” previously appeared in the HBO Max animated series “Creature Commandos.” Safran confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that the animated character, voiced by Alan Tudyk, is the same version in the upcoming film, which takes place before the events of the series.
“Clayface” releases in theaters Oct. 23.
About the writer:
Ben Hooper doesn’t want to sound like a broken record here, but he really, really thinks you should check out the “Batman: the Animated Series” two-parter “Feat of Clay” if you want to know more about Clayface—or even if you don’t care about Clayface, but you consider yourself to be a person with good taste.
