Fresh from the Adaptation Desk: May 12

The pipeline from page to screen shows no signs of slowing. Here’s a quick look at the latest adaptation announcements, casting updates and projects in development.

Official ‘Verity’ poster

On Tuesday, Amazon MGM Studios released the official poster for the upcoming thriller “Verity.” The dark red and black poster says, “There is no light where we are going,” which sets the scene for the dark tale. “Verity” is based on Colleen Hoover’s 2018 book of the same name.  

The story follows Lowen Ashleigh (Dakota Johnson) as she moves in with Verity (Anne Hathaway) and Jeremy Crawford (Josh Hartnett) to help ghostwrite for the former, a bestselling author. The logline says: “After Lowen uncovers what appears to be Verity’s chilling autobiographical notes, she wrestles with the disturbing and twisted confessions about Verity’s husband Jeremy … and finds it hard to separate fiction from reality, manipulation from attraction, and opportunity from obsession.”

‘The Good Daughter’ to premiere Nov. 12

Peacock released information on “The Good Daughter,” an adaptation of Karin Slaughter’s 2019 book of the same name. The story follows sisters Charlotte (Meghann Fahy) and Samantha (Rose Byrne) Quinn, who have spent the last 20 years trying to figure out their lives after a violent attack. When another attack occurs, Charlotte, a lawyer, is a witness.

The logline says: “As the case unfolds and twists through painful memories and buried secrets, what emerges is not just a story of survival, but of enduring ties between a father, his daughters and the complex bond between sisters.”  It will premiere on Peacock Nov. 12.

Federation Stories and Thriker Films released more pictures of Kit Harington and Mirren Mack, who will star in the upcoming adaptation of Charles Dickens’ “A Tale of Two Cities.” The limited series will air on BBC.

Prime Video renews ‘Reacher’ for a fifth season

Prime Video renewed “Reacher” for a fifth season ahead of its fourth season premiere. The popular series is based on Lee Child’s “Jack Reacher” series. Season 4 is based on the 13th book in the series, “Gone Tomorrow.”

Alan Ritchson stars as Jack Reacher in the action-packed drama series. 

‘The Terminal List’ to return on Oct. 21

During Monday’s Prime Video Upfronts, the premiere date for Season 2 of “The Terminal List” was announced. Based on the novels by Jack Carr, the series stars Chris Pratt as Navy SEAL Commander James Reece. Season 2 is based on Carr’s second novel, “True Believer,” where Reece looks for redemption and a new purpose after finishing up his list.  

The thriller will premiere on Prime Video on Oct. 21.

‘Rose Hill’ to become TV series

Also announced at Prime Video’s Upfronts, romance “Rose Hill,” based on the romance novels by Elsie Silver, will go to series.  

The logline says the story “follows best friends and neighbors West Belmont, a rancher with commitment issues, and brooding record label owner Ford Grant, aka Forbes’ ‘World’s Hottest Billionaire,’ who’s long carried a torch for West’s sister, Rosie. And when country-pop star Skylar Stone breezes into their rugged mountain town, the heat gets turned way up in this romantic family drama.”

Nia DaCosta to direct episodes of ‘Sex Criminals’

Amazon MGM Studios announced that Nia DaCosta will direct the pilot and second episode of new series “Sex Criminals.” She will also executive produce.

The series is based on the Image Comics title by Matt Fraction and Chip Zdarsky and stars Imogen Poots as Suze and John Reynolds as Jon. Suze can stop time while she has sex. She finds out that Jon has similar powers. 

Production begins on ‘Approach of the Cactus Woman and Balloon Man’

Stars Macarena García and Carlos Cuevas have started filming Netflix’s “The Approach of the Cactus Woman and the Balloon Man.” The film is based on the novel by Rayden and originally published in Spanish as “El acercamiento de la mujer cactus y el hombre globo.”   

The logline says: “Sáhara is a brilliant and ironic florist who has turned cynicism into her shield against a kind of love she believes is as fleeting as a bouquet of flowers. Ciro, a bicycle courier, lives constantly on the move, convinced that loving someone only leads to getting hurt. A fiery encounter on the streets of Madrid causes them to collide, and the city seems determined to keep bringing them back together.

‘The Rush Bible’ to be adapted to series

Sorority recruitment coach Trisha Addicks’ book “The Rush Bible” is getting a TV series. The story has been optioned by Legendary Entertainment. Eva Longoria will executive produce the series.

Addicks posted about it on Instagram: “Soooo… The Rush Bible is headed to TV. Still wrapping my head around this one!! What an unreal next chapter for this community and this brand. Can’t wait for you guys to see what’s coming.”
